What is a Dosing System?
A dosing system is a critical component of water and wastewater treatment plants. It is used to add specific chemicals into the water stream in controlled quantities to achieve desired treatment results.
Proper chemical dosing ensures process stability, efficient treatment, and consistent water quality across systems such as RO, UF, and biological treatment plants.
Types of Dosing Systems
Antiscalant Dosing System
Antiscalant dosing is used in RO systems to prevent scaling on RO membranes. It helps reduce the formation of salts such as calcium carbonate and other scaling compounds that can damage membranes and reduce system efficiency.
Hypochlorite (Hypo) Dosing System
Hypochlorite dosing is used to add chlorine into the water line or storage tank for disinfection purposes. Chlorine helps eliminate bacteria and microorganisms present in the water. In some cases, hypo dosing is also used during UF backwash cycles to help remove biological contamination from membranes.Acid Dosing System (HCl)
Acid dosing, typically using hydrochloric acid (HCl), is commonly used in RO and UF systems.
When alkalinity in the feed water is high, acid dosing is carried out before the RO system to maintain proper pH and prevent scaling on RO membranes.
HCl dosing is also used during UF backwash to remove scaling and deposits formed on the membrane surface during filtration.
Caustic Dosing System
Caustic dosing systems are used during the chemical enhanced backwash process in UF plants. The caustic chemical helps remove organic fouling and other contaminants from the membrane surface.
SMBS Dosing System
SMBS (Sodium Metabisulfite) dosing is used as a pretreatment chemical before RO systems.
SMBS neutralizes chlorine present in water because chlorine is harmful to RO membranes. If free chlorine enters the RO system, it can damage membrane pores and degrade membrane layers.
SMBS dosing protects RO membranes from oxidation and ensures longer membrane life.
Mineral Dosing System
After RO treatment, water typically has very low TDS levels, often around 10–20 ppm. Such low mineral content is not suitable for human consumption.
Mineral dosing systems are used after RO treatment to add essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium into the permeate water. This process increases the TDS level to around 100 ppm and improves the quality of drinking water.
