Common Treatment Stages in STP

1. Preliminary Treatment

This is the first stage where large and unwanted materials are removed from sewage.

Processes used :

• Screening – Removes large solids such as plastics, cloth, paper, and debris
• Oil & Grease Trap – Separates floating oil, grease, and fats
• Equalization Tank (EQ Tank) – Balances flow and maintains uniform wastewater characteristics before treatment

Purpose:

To protect downstream equipment and maintain stable treatment conditions.

2. Primary Treatment

This stage removes heavier suspended particles from wastewater.

Processes used :

• Settling / Sedimentation
• Clarification

Purpose:

To reduce suspended solids (TSS) and prepare wastewater for biological treatment.

3. Secondary (Biological) Treatment

This is the most important stage in STP, where microorganisms break down organic pollutants present in sewage.

Common biological technologies used:

• MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor)
• SBR (Sequential Batch Reactor)
• ASP (Activated Sludge Process)
• MBR (Membrane Bioreactor)

Purpose :

4. Secondary Clarifier

After biological treatment, the mixed liquor goes into a clarifier where biomass (sludge) settles down. Purpose:

5. Tertiary Treatment (Polishing)
